I do not know if they are called m44 - but I am sure someone else knows.

Nice boards, I have a pair in kornblumenblau for a medical officer.

I have never heard them called "M-44" either and I suspect they were being made before 1944. Fred Green will know.

Johnny you are correct, here is a thread with the info on these tabs, seems they were described first time in 1939. And I am sure Fred can tell us more.

Yes, I thought so, JPhilip also knows a lot about Heer items (he is one of the co-author's of Feldbluse). He sadly does not post on the WA very much any more.

Nice original tabs, but I have never seen them used on original wartime tunics.

I have several pairs of these and really like them.

A German officer 39-45 who immigrated out here to NZ, saw my first pair years ago. He said they were a private purchase type and known as one of the "delux" quality options during the war because they were flatter than the standard type.

                  Considering that I now learn on this thread that they are;

"patented DRGM 1477996 on 1.11.39 by Richter & Rohrlapper of Brandenburg / Havel."

Then private purchase delux type makes sense,

                  Chris

p.s. I used examples cut off tunic in Italy 43-45 and veteran brought back. never seen any on an "Afrika" tunic but I suppose it is possible.

Nice collection of flat wire litzen. I believe these existed at least as early as 1942. (and regs mention them before that) M44 is a collector "made up" term!
Technically speaking ALL Officers collar Litzen tabs are private purchase type because officer gear was purchased. (Eigentumsstuck)
Officers got an allowance to spend at the Kleiderkasse/tailor etc for their needs.
It's just a simpler (and less fragile) type insignia, more suitable for field wear! More durable and far less "Bling"!

To call the flat ones private purchase as opposed to Government issue makes no sense to me...ALL are private purchase....
and true "Delux" type for me would be the bullion, certainly the heavy bullion variety as shown here. That's delux in my book!
The flat ones are simple! Less bling for sure.

The German officer said that if you wanted the flat ones, marked D.R.G.M. then you had to place a special order and pay more and wait for them to arrive. Not all tailors/ stockists had them on hand. However, they all had some of the bullion types ready to go.

What WH officer collar tabs were delux quality and which were regular quality is an interesting question,

                      Chris

                        Hello,

I have always called these M44 Officer collar tabs. The patent date is for 1939 and I believe they were manufactured along with E.M. collar tabs made by the same weaving process. Forum member Diane calls this the "High Speed Weaving Process", if I am correct, and believes that the DDR carried this type of insignia weaving in the manufacture of early DDR insignia. Diane commented on the inserted link in this thread.

I have never seen a pair of these or a pair of the enlisted style that I believed to have been sewn on during the Third Reich period. They were private purchase , from what I understand and not issue insignia.

                          tabs

The closest I have seen for a pair of these tabs to be on a tunic is an unused pair I obtained from an officer who had them along with some used and other unused insignia he had. Close, but no Zigarre.

I have seen these on period uniforms and they were not issue items. I think these were a cheaper alternative than hand embroidered bullion sets for use on field uniforms etc.

This is interesting; from what I read we need to have photographic evidence and a uniform with these mounted..the latter will be difficult because they ofc could be reapplied on an empty space..
