The one positive aspect of our hobby is the vast number of
excellent reference books now available.
If you want to be able to identify both very basic insignia like this Jaeger patch
as well as the more obscure insignia, I'd recommend the Angolia/Schlecht books on the German Army & Luftwaffe; volume 1 of each will give you excellent basic information.
From there you can expand your knowledge of more specific topics as your interest
grows.
