    Sonderverband 288 Patch

    Hi All,

    Just thought I would share the tunic removed Sonderverband 288 Patch that was part of a huge vets grouping I just got in. A pretty difficult patch to find!

        Does someone own tunics with this 288patch? Or stripped examples with clear shadows.

                Hi Gents

                Im searching some info this type of patches and Im so confused about who were them(KODAT,DAL,SONDERVERBAND 287 AND 288)) and who among them used this patch and what about another patch for this front with legend Afrika Freies over a flag green,white,black colors and did exist another different patch in that theatre?

                  My understanding is that 287 and 288 wore the patch, the unit was redesignanted to a Pz Gen unit after it was destroyed in Afrika. Anyone assigned to the unit would have been allowed to wear it. From the photos I have seen, most guys had one or two of these patches. It's pretty uncommon to get photos of the patch I wear. The unit has a really interesting history. Matt

                      That outfit includes members of the French Foreign Legion who were captured in Afrika and forced to join the Heer, correct?

                        Your thinking about the 361st Afrika Regt that was initially made up of some members of the Legion, thought they were all volunteers though ?

                        The sv288 was initailly interpreters, communications, scientists for the Middle East etc. it morphed into a fighting unit.
                        I believe only the 2nd Co (GbJg) was allowed to wear the patch and edelweiss together.

                          the unit make up was all sorts of weird stuff, basically the goal was for them to help seize the oil fields by having people that spoke the language and what not. The unit had 3 STUGs, 1 Company of GJ and some other folks assigned to it. It held the line as the main Afrikakorps group retreated after the 2nd battle at El Alemeine and was basically destroyed in the process. I believe it was redesignated to the 90 th PzGrn Rgt in Italy and saw some action there as a PzGrn unit. I have a great photo of a STUG member wearing his SV288 patch sewn onto his continental grey wrapper. Matt

                            Regarding Sonderverband 287 in Russia I have a friend who, after recovering from a wound, was posted to SVB 287 in Russia and he has a number of photos of himself and others wearing full tropical kit including first pattern tunics and caps with soutache. They look like they must be in North Africa but they're in Russia. I did ask him about any special insignia and he said he never saw nor wore such and no one in the photos had any insignia on the right sleeve. Also a few vehicles were in the photos but with no obvious special insignia. His Soldbuch is the only proof that he was in 287. He finished his service in Pz. Gren. Lehr Regt. 902 and managed to avoid ever being taken prisoner.

                              Here is an interesting link from the Lexikon der Wehrmacht that shows that Sonderverband 288 were renamed Panzergrenadier Regiment Afrika in late 1942.
