It looks like a nice original to me with a variation cloth on the back of the award planchett. This also is a first pattern award in the lowest grade available.

When you say "variation" do you mean you have seen others with the backing cloth like this! maybe it was the soldier who had that done!

In variation I mean , a difference from an issue piece. I have never seen a backing quite like this but I have seen some varied backings.
