    Gebirgsjager trousers

    Hello everyone.

My name is Jarno, I'm new to the forum, and I am a big fan of vintage mountaineering and found on the internet a website about a Gebirgsjager reënactment meeting called 'project edelweiss'. Now I was wondering where I can buy good quality original or a reproduction M36 (stone gray) Gebirgsjagers mountain trousers... And I mean quality wool (like the original) that can be worn in -7°C temperatures. Also I would like to buy a pre-war mountaincap and other Gebirgsjager stuff. Can anybody help me? Anybody good experience with previousbought products or websites?

Thanks in advance and sorry that my English isn't perfect.

          Hi Jarno,

Welcome to the forum. Please do not apologize for your English. I only wish that I could effectively communicate in another language. You are doing fine. Is your first language French or Flemish?
Your question is not easily answered. I consider myself a collector of original Gebirgsjäger uniforms and equipment, but I have done reenacting/living history and I now have a collection of reproduced uniforms and equipment too.
So, at this point I have to ask, are you attempting to purchase items that would accurately recreate a 1930’s Gebirgsjäger, or is your emphasis on going mountaineering using stuff that’s looks something like what the Gebirgsjäger wore?

Knowing that, I will try to help you with what I’ve learned from my experience.

          -Matt

Gebirgsjgr, my first language is Flemish. Well... I am open for both reproduction as original actualy. The most important thing for me is that it is quality material and I am affraid that i buy reprodcution it is cheap quality. So your experience would much be appreciated!

              Currently, my favorite Berghosen is:
              http://www.ebay.com/itm/WW2-German-M...-/121704511447
              and Bergmütze is:
              http://www.ebay.com/itm/WW2-German-W...QAAMXQBg5RsH55

I will tell you that you may not be satisfied with the quality of the trousers, but they are in fact very close to the originals (I've compared them side-by-side with originals).
There are some Lost Battalion and Janke made hosen out there, but they are hard to find. These were made with thicker wool.

For a long time, there were no Steingrau Berghosen available, so I converted Swedish field trousers. They were very acceptable in looks and sturdiness, but it was a lot of work.

              I hope that helps.

              -Matt

It helps allot! The trousers look good at first sight, are they 100% wool? And do you mean that the wool is verry close to the originals or the design?

Can you also give some advice or a website about how they used to layer their clothes for cold weather?

                Thanks in advance!

The cloth seems to be wool, but I do not know the percentage. As you probably already know, the originals were not 100% either. The originals are rougher to the touch. The pattern, cloth and color are very close to the originals.

What I'm concerned about is that you may find them too light in weight. I'm not an expert on clohing textiles, but wool comes in different weights, and these are definetly on the light side - though I believe they are correct. The Swedish trousers that I mentioned before are definitely a heavier weight.

As far as layering, to my knowledge, until 1942, the laying consisted of wearing trousers over the long underwear, but this was true in all four seasons and from Norway to Crete. By today's standards, this would not be acceptable, but that's what they had. I say 1942, because along with the Windbluse they also issued the Windhosen. This wind-proofing has a big impact.

I thought that was common knowledge. I'm not sure why. All I know is that I'm extremely lucky that English has become the international language, since all my attempts to learn other languages have failed.
