I may be wrong, but the shoulder boards look like late DDR to me....

I agree.the early east german boards were boullion and changed to cellon in 1965 .the extra loop was added in 1980 .

These are an example of later East German Generals boards

Johnny's boards are the 1980 to 1990 type . the ones on this generals tunic look like the 1965 to 1979 type. only a hands on inspection could deterime if they are wartime or east german . the marschalls baton shows the different types of boards the east german generals wore .

Look at the floppy quality cello embroidery of the DDR boards ?
nothing to do with the cello period tough quality !
Base cloth is also different in the quality .
