        How common were unit insignia on cap...either official or non official soldier art type? More common later in the war?

          I think they were more common later in the war IMHO. You would have "official" ones in which there was an Urkunde (award certificate). I have seen examples of these for the 1., 26., and 16. Panzer Divsions. Smaller units had them also, I remember seeing one made like an eight wheel armored car and another like a Tiger tank. They are just a unique and fascinating item.
