Sanitater Sleeve Insignia

Good morning all:

I am trying to find out more about the Sanitater Arm Insignia. I have been searching the forums, google, and Alex Buchner's German Army Medical Corps of World War II and still have not been able to find a true answer to the following question:

What did the Sanitater have to do in order earn the arm insignia? Was it a specific school, exam, or level of experience?

If it was a school, how long was the school and was it conducted at their assigned Ersatz Abteilung?

Also if you have any general information on Sanitater's training including lengths of time, etc. I would be greatly appreciative.

A sanitäter has to finish a course of 4 weeks and pass the test to earn the right to wear the armpatch.

It was a school, often at a Standort-lazarett, but not always.

At the ersatz-abtlg they often recieved supplentary courses (a sanitäter participated in a continous education during the career).

All in all, your question is a bit difficult to answer as there were different set-ups depending on weather we are talking about the army, Luftwaffe, navy, gebirgsjäger or SS.

Here is a field qualification certification for an Assistant Stretcher Bearer issued on April 25, 1945, only 15 days before the war ended. It says loosely...

The Senior Corporal Anton Ridlewski has taken part in, from the period from April 15 to 25 1945, in a training course for Medical Assistant Stretcher Bearer at the field hospital (motorized) 672 in Naostved and has permission to wear a white arm band with the word “Auxiliary Stretcher-Bearer” on it.

Naestved, Denmark is located on the island of Zeeland north of Copenhagen. Denmark was officially free of German control on May 5, 1945.

Fantastic certificate..!!!...but Neastved is in the South-west of Zeeland.

Perfect that was exactly what I was looking for. So this was a school in addition to the medical training they would have received during their initial Sanitater training.
