(Since the pictures in the old thread are gone now, I want to post them again here. )
The tunic belonged to Leutnant Heinrich Wahrheit.
On May 20th 1944, during heavy fighting near Jassy in the Ukraine, Leutnant Heinrich Wahrheit (Pz.Gren.Rgt.108) received a gunshot wound to the back and hand-grenade fragments to his head and upper body. Suffering from internal injuries with heavy blood loss and near death Lt. Wahrheit was attented to by a field-medic. The medic cut Wahrheit's tunic open at the back and left sleeve to get to the injuries and administer first aid treatment.
After Lt. Wahrheit's wounds were dressed the tunic was laid over him to keep him warm. Lt. Wahrheit was taken to a field dressing station and then evacuated by air to a hospital.
The trauma left Wahrheit with a spinal injury and blindness in both eyes.
On June 5, 1944 Lt. Warheit was awarded the Iron Cross 1st class and on July 13, 1944 he was awarded the WB in silver. However, after permanently losing his left eye and 70% of his remaining eyesight, the WB was upgraded to Gold on August 9, 1944.
After the war Heinrich Wahrheit finished his education as a public school teacher. He lived near Heidelberg and retired in 1979.
Somehow he kept the tunic for the rest of his life.
