They are issue straw over boots- Strohschuhe

Here is a photo from the web- The Russians used these as well. The leather Jack boots were worthless in the winter. The stray boots were a quick fix.

Wow. Thanks for the info and pic. I wonder if they were treated with something to make them waterproof against the mud.

Like the "Frankenstein boots" it was almost impossible to walk more then short distances in them. They were mainly for guard duty and for wear when not moving far.
