    EM´s GD boards from estate

    Hi all,

just found these boards on a house clearence, unfortunatly there wasnt anything more from the soldier.
My question is, what does the yellow mean on the GD and why are they piped in white ?

    Thanks, Jens

Is it possible that the 'GD' on both items just dirty/aged and are in fact white?

Hi, its clearly yellow compared to the white piping. If stained the color piping would also in the same color.
Is it known if they recoloered boards ?

          Hi,

In terms of colours, Golden yellow is for Aufklärung (reco) units and Lemon yellow is for Nachrichten (transmissions) ones.

In this case, I would say that the "GD" is golden yellow, and therefore that these boards are for an enlisted man in a Reco unit.

The yellow tends to loose its colours after years so may be the piping is made of a material loosing its colours faster than the thread used for the "GD".

          Best,

          Max

Thank you for ID the color.

You are right on the fading, but the white on the boards is so even, I dont think it has faded away, also were the moths eat some surface of the piping you can see even more bright white color, so there is no yellow on the piping.

Look like very nice boards. Congratulations!
Here is another one. Seems like the white piping and colored waffenfarb combination remain a bit of an enigma.

Why the yellow stains on the tongues? The GD's were probably white and dyed yellow.

I really like these straps. If I had to guess, I would say that these may have been made for the Nachrichten Zug when Grossdeutschland was only a regiment.

The type of wool piping used on the shoulder boards that started the thread does fade to white - it must have been a phenomenon peculiar to that shade of dye. The signals shade does this on some uniform items - I don't know why, but it does.

if the piping has faded, thats some serious fading......how about peeping under the seam and checking the wool on the piping.....or be brave and get a needle and pull a single thread from the embroidery..........

Another "crazy" theory. We know two things for sure:

In this case, couldn't we imagine that it was a reco unit attached to the FBB ? Having the white piping of this specific unit and the golden yellow of the unit type ?

I always thought that the FBB had "everything white" but since we are obviously facing something special...
