    Piped General's M 36

    Dear All,

I was offered my very first piped general's M36 tunic. Just to be sure, how does one tell the difference between an upgraded ornamented Arty M36 and a genuine general's piped M36? What else is there to look for?

    Thanks in advance

    Best regards,
    Al

    Hi Albert -

Look for the obvious first - re-applied eagle, re-applied buttons, and re-applied boards and tabs. The tabs are usually easier to tell as the officer's dress tabs were shorter than general officer tabs, and there should be a line of stitching visible. Look also at the lining under the shoulder for signs of re-sewing - not damning in itself, but that's where you'd have to go to re-apply shoulder boards if you are doing a good job.

      Hi Albert -

Please be careful. I looked for 2 years to get a good M-36 General tunic. I saw a lot of upgraded tunic that were not real. A real pipped General tunic is very expensive. It is also common to upgrade a pipped artillery tunic to General rank. I would suggest to get good pictures and to post them before closing the deal.

      regards

What Don said. Amazing what a close examination outdoors in the sunlight will show up! Back of the collar is probably the first place to look.

          Thanks guys,

Those are the areas I also examine first. The question that still is open is: are there differences between an ornamented Arty M36 and a piped general's M36? If we look at those two stripped jackets, will we know what is what?

BTW, I found a price guide on an overcoat on Bill's side. What would be a bench mark for a 100% original, perhaps even attributed, piped general's M36.

This is the deal. I collector I know got from a picker friend of his a general's overcoat with a maker and owner label (named blacked out), and a piped general's M36 with just a taylor label. I found a great coat on Bill's site, but need a price guide on the tunic; I mean what's a fair price to pay.

          Thanks in advance

          Best regards,
          Albert
