In 1939 there are two matches for Major's with that last name, both (E) officers in administrative staff positions that made Oberst but are not indicated to have made Generalmajor.

Major (E) 01.08.34 KNÖPFLER Valentin (Stab W.E.I. Allenstein) Oberst (01.02.42)
    Major (E) 01.08.36 KNÖPFLER Walter 10.11.1883-12.09.1943 (Stab WBK Königsberg I) Oberst (01.04.42)

No matches in the 1944-45 list and no matches in the Kellig book listing Heer Generals-

Walter was killed as an Oberst in 1943-

    Nachname:Knöpfler
    Vorname:Walter
    Dienstgrad:Oberst
    Geburtsdatum:10.11.1883
    Geburtsort:Marienwerder
    Todes-/Vermisstendatum:12.09.1943
    Todes-/Vermisstenort: Königsberg/Pr. Rela III, Maraunenhof

Thanks very much Johnny for you help!

I found hauptmann Knöpfler with german cross but are not indicated to have made Generalmajor.

      Knöpfler, Raimund, 28.05.1944, Hauptmann, Adjutant Stab/3. Geb.Div.

      Regards.

There is a chance he was promoted at the very end of the War and it has been over-looked by researchers. He may have a service file in the US National Archives, it may or may not show the promotion. In the last months of the War the files were not always updated.

I think that he was already general major in 1939 according with the label of the great coat.

No rank is listed on the tag. Uniform items were upgraded and modified with promotions. It is very common to see the red lapels and piping added to older tunics when officers were promoted to Generalmajor.
