Since 90th Light really sounded like he knew what he was talking about, I decided to give this M-44 a second soaking. It made me nervous since it looked "OK" but I knew there was more dye present. I feared that the tunic might fall apart.
I used Carbona again and soaked it for 30 minutes as before. The water didn't turn black like before but it clouded up immediately. I also gently moved the piece around while it soaked so that the remover was evenly inside all parts. After 30 minutes I began to rinse it, I used warm water and saw the dark cloudy water continue to come out. I probably re-filled the sink 8-10 times before the water tuned clear [ish].
I did this two days ago. After the soak I laid it out to air dry. Today, it's dry enough to take pictures. It's lighter but more important to me, there was no harm done with the second soak. I'm glad I gave it a second soak [thanks for the advice Chris].
