Picked this up. Thought it was interesting and well made but is it a WW2 German item?

Its unmarked as far as I can see.

I'd have to agree with the rest here; not a period original. The style doesn't even match period pieces.

I only know of two accepted WWII styles and added PIC's below. The top badge, with the long flat prongs, is a period original. The bottom piece, with the pointed short tabs, may be late war or post-war manufactured but, these were supposedly found by the boxes unissued.
