Unknown Sleeve Insignia Help

Going through a photo-album, and was curious about the sleeve insignia of the guy on the right, I'm not familiar with it. Looks to be a horse-shoe to me, but I can't find anything about it.
Any other information about these guys would be great as well.

Agree and a fairly commonly seen patch. Here is a tropical version and the German term for the trade is hufbeschlaglehrmeister.
