III BTl. J.R. 271 Feldherrnhalle Ashtray??

Moderators please move this thread if it does not belong here. I also posted this in the Order of Battler Forum.

I just picked up this aluminum what I think to be an ashtray. I really don't know for sure. As you can see it is marked Christmas 1939 III BTl. J.R. 271 (Feldherrnhalle). Per Edwards/Pruett's book the III BTl. was formed in October of '39. Also, the III battalion was almost completely formed from SA Feldherrnhalle guys from the SA FHH Standarte. The ashtray/bowl is approximately 6 inches wide and around an inch and a half deep. Far too small for a serving bowl. Note the Major's name at the bottom. Does anyone out there have any information on who would have been the commander of the III BTl. 271 in 1939? The name looks like "Paben" or something like that. I have looked through everything and just can't find any information. The bowl is maker marked Laymer & Sohn Hannover, I think. Any help on the unit or its commander is greatly appreciate!

    Thanks,

    Mark

            Mark,
According to Erich Jainek's "Soldaten der Standarte Feldherrnhalle," (p. 21):

The group of volunteers of SA Standard "Feldherrnhalle" was immediately moved to the training area at Jüterbog (near Potsdam), where it came under the command of the newly formed 93. Infanterie-Division of Generalleutnant Otto Tiemann. A few weeks later, the 3rd Battalion of Infanterie-Regiment 271 was formed under Major Günther Raben. On 15 June 1940, Major Raben was killed in bunker fighting in France…

That's all there is posted about Raben in the book.
            Hope this helps!
            Bob

                    Major Raben

Thread is a little older but here a pic out of a FHH photoalbum.

Wow, great find! Many thanks for posting the picture. Interesting to note that Raben must have had command rank in both the Heer and Luft. Which makes sense because this would have been a transitional period for the FHH. Also, the signature appears to be the same as on the bowl. A small world in this hobby and it goes to show, you never know what is going to turn up!

                      ...thanks again

Just a little comment. I think this is the handwriting of the guy who was the owner of this album. He wrote Major Raben. Even it looks similar to the signature but in that case it is not the signature of Raben himself. skalp
