    Greetings,
I got this one a while ago but I was only recently able to scan it to show on the Forum. Enjoy! Sincerely, DJB

Very nice!! Probably taken right when the War started. Note his shoulder straps are turned over to hide the number.

      "J-R"

The straps do appear to reversed. However were'nt these waffenrock straps normally sew ins? His left shouder board looks pretty tight. Could be perhaps he has a reservist underlay/ply, or did this practice only apply to officer ranks???

Looking at it the photo the negative may actually be (period) altered to hide the unit numbers. The piping does look light for panzer-compare the tabs etc. My understanding is that at this point in the WH only officers wore the light colored piping for reserve status.

It is a really odd picture actually. Where was this from Ebay? Look at the CT area carefully.

Let me show it to you this way- note the edges, it was dropped on there with Photoshop.

This took me about 5 minutes while talking on the phone there is blur but I could fix that easily. The lines around the CT in the above image on the zoom make it suspicious. The waffenfarbe to me looks like artillery, sorry, I am not 100% sure but it is odd for the rank and the lack or any awards.

I am not 100% but the pixels around the CT look odd to me especially the two rectangular areas around and above the "1939". I hope it is real, it is a cool picture, maybe someone knows about the paper etc.

I think I can put an end to the interesting speculation on this photo. I discovered it in an old box of postcards at the Mainz fleamarket on August 12, 1978 and bought it for about a dollar, long before photoshop. I had it for years until I sold it to Bob Queen, who later sold or traded it to his son, Eric. Eric had it for a long time, and this is the first time I've seen the photo since Eric owned it.

In short, the photo is 100% legit.

That does eliminate the idea of photoshop, the lines around the CT may just be reflection from the flash etc. The pixel effect was what made me think something was going on. Oh well. The boards still are very interesting, they look very light compared to the other piping.

Despite the lack of "L" unit insignia, I think that this man is likely from the Panzer-Lehr-Regiment. I've seen pink (particularly the darker prewar rose pink) show up in this shade on b/w photos. The lighter line of piping would indicate the additional silver piping worn by a "Kapitulant" - an enlisted soldier who voluntarily signed on for a longer term of active duty.

Here is another early photo with the "L" visible on the boards. Enjoy! Sincerely, DJB
