I am looking for some information on the Luftwaffe field division's insignia for officer. I assume it had the green backing on the collar tabs and the green piping on the shoulder boards? Anyone has some examples that they can share? Jacques

Exactly what I am looking for. Anyone else have some examples, especially for the green officers collar tabs? Even period pics will be nice. I found these on the forum owned by PaulR. JacquesLast edited by jacquesf; 10-12-2011, 07:57 AM.

Hi jacquesf,
Thank you for posting the image. These are all of the colors which I had at the time of the pic. There are more, like orange, green, and yellow. Since I posted the photo that Jacques posted, I have been able to track down the green and yellow piped examples.
The LWFD Officers used the badge green collar tabs, without the colored outer piping, which is seen on the enlisted tabs. Both officers and enlisted members wore their specialty waffenfarbe on the underlay/piping of their shoulder boards.
Example... A LWFD Pioneer officer would wear the green LW officer's collar tabs, with the metal braid piping. The shoulder boards would have the black underlay.
I am confused by the cyphered shoulder boards posted. The only LWFD shoulder boards that should have regimental numbers would be those belonging to LWFD Flak/Arty units. I would think that they would have the red waffenfarbe. The boards could be Heer Jager or Gebirgsjager?
Regards
Paul

Hi Jacques,
In my collecting experience the officers field division tabs are one of the most difficult tabs to acquire. Out of my 130 Luftwaffe officer tabs, I only have 2 FD pair; Major and Oberst. When offered for sale they can be quite pricey (for Luftwaffe tabs), especially when compared to tabs with from other waffenfarbe (FD can sell for up to $400 per pair). Additionally I have only seen a handful of officer FD tabs for sale over these past 4-5 years I have been collecting tabs. The enlisted/NCO tabs on the other hand are much more plentiful. There have been many hordes of unissued tabs (no gulls) found and these can be see frequently on dealer's sites. The Ruptured Duck has a nice, albeit, expensive selection of EM/NCO FD tabs available on his site.
One needs to be careful when buying FD tabs since many are put togethers. Also note that the lighter EM/NCO green tabs can be for ATC and some dark green EM/NCO tabs/boards are for Admin.

I have seen some LWFD for sale for high prices, but I have noticed that they tend to not really move.
The only dark green(and I mean really dark green) LW tabs with a single gull is for the Low Career Level Sonderfuhrer, pre war. It never has more than one gull. There is no confusion with this tab being LWFD.

I think the reason the tabs don't move is there is such little interest in Luftwaffe tabs in general. I can't tell you how many rare tabs ( to include the ones I picked up at the MAX) are found at the end of a show. Most people don't know their rarity or don't care. I have seen the same tabs for years and years on dealers sites and tables.

How soon we forget our lesser known brothers
The apparent lack of interest has baffled me too. I understand why admin tabs and some of the other obscure branches aren't hot items. It takes a fair amount of research and effort to understand all of it. I wonder if some of the high prices are a result of some dealers not understanding just how small our "squad sized" community is?
