Best way to tell the difference between a M36 and M40 tunic with replaced collar?????

    Hi Guys,

what is the best way to tell the difference between a M36 tunic and M40 tunic with a replaced dark green collar? When collecting officer converted EM tunics this can be a bit of a puzzle. The M41, 42, 43, 44 are all clearly different from the M36 (or for that matter from the M40) so it is quite easy to tell what you are dealing with even if these tunics had a dark green collar added. All help appreciated!

    Cheers, Willem

Well, to start with should the markings with date help you determine if it is a M40 or not. Even when the tunic was converted to officer, 9-10 still retained the original liner.

Hi F, is it certain that no M36 were produced in 1940 or later? And what if the stamp is faded? Is there no construction difference whatsoever, besides the collar, between a M36 and a M40? Cheers, W

I can imagine that some M36 style tunics overlapped production of the M40 tunic in 1940, but I would not think later then that no (unless proven otherwise of course).

There can be differences in fabrics for the lining, but basically when the issued insignia have been changed for officer examples, there is no difference. (Btw there is a difference in lining construction between a M35 and M36 tunic though, so in that case you would be possible to determine, since of course these M35 tunics have been worn through the years as well).
