M36 to Cavalry Major (WWI Vet)

Hi guys,

I was lucky to pick this up from a fellow WAF member and friend. It is not my typical area of interest but I cannot pass up a named grouping. The grouping is to Cavalry Major Dr. Walter Schaff. He is a WWI vet who also served from the outset of WWII. The tunic itself has many interesting features:

French Cuffs
Double reinforced award holes for EKI
Ribbon bar is sewn on (probably a good idea for that length)
Upper pocket buttons are affixed to the pocket flap and non-functional.

The grouping also includes quite a bit of documentation: Soldbuch, military driving permit, passes, travel orders, marching orders, train tickets, password slip, WWI and WWI veteran's award documents. document of pre-war employment at The Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, and army volunteer document from 19 August, 1914

Your new tunic looks very nice.

Did the guy get no awards during WWII? What did he do during WWII? All his awards are WWI decorations.

What kind of tunic is this exactly? An officer kleiderkasse tunic? There are stamps but it is obviously not an EM tunic.

Actually it is, it is a reworked M40 EM tunic (added French cuffs, green collar, removed bandage pocket...).

Thanks very much guys. Yes these named groupings are in a class all on their own.

Did the guy get no awards during WWII? What did he do during WWII? All his awards are WWI decorations.

He was awarded the KVK2 w swords as indicated on his ribbon bar. He served as an ajutant from what I have read so far. There is some paperwork that indicates late in the war he was ordered to muster fragmented units and organize defense in France.

I will post more info as I work through it.

If it is a reworked M40 what happened to the overbite i.e. the overlapping tunic closure? This one seems raisor straight.

As for the KVK2 would that be the third ribbon on the bar? If so, where is his Hindenburg cross or is that the second on the bar? If so, those two should be in reverse order. No biggy though. Mistakes were made even in the TR - as of course became painfully obvious during the course of the war.
