    Besslein,
The only originals I've seen of this soldiers' keepsake do not have that backing and are simply woven on random backing panels (made from scrap). I have one which is identicle to a veteran returned example.
I look forward to reading other opinions.
    Regards,
    Mark

Looks to me like the fake that was sold by WW2 Ltd of St. Louis, item 54-R on page 48 in their old 1978 catalog,- & shown again sewn to their fake DAK M41 cap pictured on page 130.
I'm not able to post pictures.

Another example that I initially thought was the same one as posted by "NZ Mark"

Quote: Book, "Rommel's Army In Africa" by Dal McGuirk, PG 95.

I have no doubt that fakes of these do exist...but the one I know of exactly (and I use that word in it's true sense) like mine was found in a tropical breadbag in untouched condition - and I trust the current caretaker who knows his 'DAK' from his 'tropical' items.

with a backing like the one shown at top I tend to lean towards reproduction. I do like Mark's example quite a bit but the embroidery is much nicer than Besslin's example. With a backing like that it would have to be manufactored in Germany or Italy and the embroidery looks nothing like Italian embroidery that I have seen. If the price was right it would be something to sit on, I wouldn't pay very much for it as its just one of those items you can never really be sure of. JMHO. Matt

I have seen a few of these over the years and have assumed them all to have been fantasy items. A difficult item to prove as an original, if they ever existed.

This example was on Ebay a while back.

The backing material is the same as german custom made US insignia done after the war. There are examples of post war items that the veterans themselves buy and put with their wartime items. Are they reproductions yes in a certain way they are but the veterans have them as rememberance pieces.

my vet was from ex DDR,so no way he was able to take this patch from any vet bund,as this has not work in east germany.

                            My experience with these,

The wartime existence of patches in the style of NZMark's has been
confirmed with an item obtained from an indisputable veteran source in NZ.

The origin of these items could either be as examples of
"field art" made by German soldiers with needle and thread or they may
have been purchased to order (i.e. available in some numbers) in any of
the Egyptian and Libyan cities large enough to have Arab tailors trading
                            over 1941, 42 and 43.

The examples seen by Jerry and Matt could be either
originals or modern copies made for the collector market modeled on an
                            original piece.

In any case these patches are not very collectable and it
would be strange to have fakes made that would not give a good return in
                            $$ to the fakers.

The postwar DAK Veterans' organisation would not
have been party to the construction of insignia carrying a swastika-
there was simply not a market for this sort of illegal "remembrance" item
among German veterans after the war.

                            Hope this might help,

                            Chris

                              Hi Chris,
Sent you a pm but your box is full - you need to do some house-cleaning!
My example matches the patch you've mentioned (have examined it myself).
