Any ideas on what the boards say and what his unit might be? Look like S7 or L7...

It is probably piped in golden yellow, they were allowed to wear their prewar uniforms for walking out complete with the insignia from earlier assignments and upgraded rank. He may have been wounded and then reassigned to a Flak unit etc. Many infantry with leg wounds were reclassified and transfered etc.

Notice he does not have an IAB either so something may have happened early and he was transfered etc. The CT is loose and just tacked on there, that is neat to see. He was tiny, note the size of the tabs and the visor crown.

As side note about sleeve cuff embelishments. I remember reading the reason why they applied braid and buttons to the cuffs back in history was because the rank and file were not sufisticated as "gentlemen" and the soldiers would wipe their noses on the cuffs of their sleeves so to prevent them from doing so, braid and buttons were put on the cuffs to stop them them from doing it. So think this is a hold over from the past without knowing the original use of the braid etc.

This is a joke correct (I hope)?

Prior to the design and award of the Tank Destruction Badge, knocking out an armored vehicle with a hand-held weapon was recognized with the award of the General Assault Badge. So this is one possible explanation for the soldier sporting a GAB alongside his Army Flak Badge.

No it's not a joke, the story goes back to the days of the british redcoats.
