Help with Oberfeldwebel Shldr Boards

Hi All,
Here's a set of Oberfeldwebel Pionier Shoulder Boards that I have, are they good or bad? The tresse around the boards looks to have been painted white. If these boards are original, was this common or done postwar?

I cannot tell from the images but sometimes when silver tresse flakes and gets hard it sort of looks like white paint but it is the metal in the fibers that is oxidizing.
