A freind has a relative that was in the German 5th Mountain Division (5th Gebirgs Division), 100th regiment. He was an early member of the NSDAP. I am trying to ascertain what can be derived from this photo of him other than he was awarded the EK2. It looks like he is wearing a golden party badge. Can you tell what his rank is from this, what the ribbons are for, anything of interest in this image? Appreciate any insights.

As I see it he was an lt or possibly an oberlt if it is a rank pip and not unit number device, and wore the SA Sports Badge, as well as the EKII. Yes it does look like a Golden Party Badge, but as for the ribbon bar I can't say -
The award combination suggest a early war picture. He also does not look happy to have the picture taken. JacquesComment

To see a golden party badge on a GJ leutnant is very unusual indeed.
not sure about the ribbons, the last one could be a westwall or volkspflegeCollecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.Comment

The rank is Leutnant with "100" applied.
The ribbons are full size, I would say either WWI service or KVK with swords and the last one I agree with the others.Comment

Thank you for taking a look. He served in WWI so the ribbon bar may very well be for awards from then. Born in 1898.Comment
