Personally I’m not the biggest fan of any restoration projects unless the history can be determined and it’s not solely the personal preference of the collector. This tunic of yours is the famous exception on the rule! Besides that you’ve done a great and tasteful job in restoring and preserving, the story that comes with it - backed up with period and real-time photo’s - is almost to good to be true!

    Compliments!

      Hello Ostmark

Great restoration project, great story You have done a great job. This includes letting the original owner wear the wrap like he did 65 years ago. How was his reaction?

      Thanks for showing and telling

      best regards

      Erwin

        Job well done, Ostmark.
Like Zauberflöte already said, I am not a fan of resewing insignias but this was simply well done.

Great to see this "Afrikaner" wearing his old uniform.

What unit was he with in Afrika?

Years ago a friend of mine aquired an officer's tunic that had a name tag in it and we contacted the officer reguarding his tunic and got the reply back that it couldn't have been his tunic since he had worn his tunic till it was in tatters. he said he had removed his insignia while in the POW camp and when he was finally released the tunic was garbage and it went into the trash. I was a crushing blow to my friend as he paid alot of money for this tunic to then find out he had gotten burned

            Thanks for all your comments

I must admit that i was a bit nervous to post the restored wrapper because here are collectors with a lot of experience. But it seems i have done my job perfectly. When i showed him the wrapper he told me that he was thinking from time to time to throw the wrapper in the trash is was like . For him a old tunic is more or less worthless, just the pics about his service have a meaning for him. Always when he is looking in his albums its like beeing back in service
            with his men for him

            List of Divisions he served:
            1941 in the 15.PzDiv (Tobruk, Solum,Halfaia Pass)
1942 10.PzDiv (Tunesia with FJ Rgt Koch)
            1944 21. PzDiv

            Thread will be continued ;-)

                  Update

I had a meeting with my friend, we talked about his service and had a few glasses of good wine. Before i left he overhanded me his headgear that he has worn in Normandy and Afrika ...

                  Here some pics

M40 Cap he has worn 1941 in Afrika when he served in the 15. PD

Wow!!!! Not just a great looking wrapper nicely restored, but an incredible sidecap and that tropical cap is just superb. You are one lucky fellow.

Wonderful thread! A great privilege to have received his rapper and headgear from the veteran himself. Probably one of the best compliments I could think of. I am glad that he knows that his memory and history will be preserved for the future. Good job!!

Your next challenge will be to restore the two caps!
