I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the restoration of this wrap. It will be quite a good looking finished piece. I'm also amazed to find out that this wrap is the one shown in such a well known photograph from Normandy.
I'm sure that you won't have too many problems finding the correct insignia. If you can't find a well used Afrika cuff I'll be able to help but I'm sure that you'll be able to find one.

This is really fascinating and why I love this board. I would highly recommend getting a videotaped oral history from the veteran about his time in Normandy.

I assume wartime drillich will be used for the restoration. Good luck!

I agree Johnny! What I was asking but didn't word my original post very well was why is it then that when an "added to" tunic gets posted, the tone of the replies is usualy one of disdain that the insignia are not original to it? Do you see what I'm driving at?
I'm all for "restoring an item back to it's original glory" as Glenn put it, so long as it's done properly. However, I can't remember the last time anyone complimented on a job well done of doing that exact thing. Unless the whole background is known, the usual comments are that it's been well sewn but not original so collectors are suspicious that it's been done to decieve.
It's one of those catch 22 situations that I find interesting and the reason why I asked the original question.

Does anyone have pictures how an Afrika cufftitle was added to the sleeve. How both ends where folded to the sleeve and where the stitching was done would be for great interest for me ...

Great and deserving find, my friend. Enjoy the contact with the vet. Jacques

There were many different applications methods used but most are hand-stitched along the edges or attached using a hidden stitch. The CTs were usually cut to fit the sleeve and about 1 CM was left on each edge and folded under the cufftitle on the inside seam. If I can make a friendly suggestion-If you do not have a lot of experience restoring tunics, I would try to find someone that is familar with doing it and is skilled with hand sewing etc. It is much more difficult to do than it seems. I would also use period threads etc. Good luck.

                Thanks Johnny for your help

The application of the insignias will be done from an expert as you mentioned. To find period thread is a challenge

I usually find it at home sales or sometimes churches have stores where they sell items. You can find it on Ebay as well. I will PM you with some other info I do not want to post here to help fakers should they be in the pool.

Congratulations on acquiring the wrap, it's a killer example with vet provenance and a picture of it in wear, in Normandy, with Rommel - one can't ask for much more than that! If at all possible I would love to hear some of the vets first hand accounts of his combat in Normandy.

Good luck with the restoration. As for period thread, try Bill Shea. He may have some...

Looking forward to seeing the restoration job once it's finished!

I have been much more succesful with having people respond to my threads after sending away for this. I am also 4 inches taller and women find me more alluring with my newly found abilities to radiate confidence-

Thanks for the advice Johnny. Thing is though, I'm happy with my height and never had a problem attracting women so I'll pass on this booklet, thank you.

Strange that my question would attract such animosity. Touched a nerve prehaps?

No animosity in any way shape or form, The ad is about 60 years old and I was making a joke as I assumed you were and did not suggest you were short or unable to attract Women. I usually get ignored as well. No worries
