I've yet to fully understand the world of tunic collecting.
We see here an original wrap and the owner declares that he wants to restore it with the insignia that is missing. Fair enough and people seem quite open to that, even encouraging it.

However, let's say this same wrap appears for sale 2 years from now with insignia applied. From all the threads I've read, I guarantee that the first comment will be, "restored insignia" and with a shake of the head and a frown because they never read this thread or the thread has long gone.

So my question is, although it's human nature to put things back together, is it really advisable because in the long run, it inevitably just casts doubts on an otherwise non questionable and sought after stripped but untouched original?

Great tunic and knowing the history behind it makes it even better. I have to agree with Ben about restorations on tunics with known veteran provenance. I would not restore a tunic unless I had the original insignia that was once on it and used period thread...but even then I don't think I would restore it if the provenance was there. I have a Luftwaffe uniform with veteran history and period photo of it in wear and I wouldn't think of adding the missing breast eagle. But it is your tunic and if the veteran prefers it restored then more power to you and please show us the finished results

I don't see a problem with restoring an item back to it's original glory...What I don't like is when things are added that were never there to begin with...Cufftitles,cloth awards,campaign shields and so on.

Well as some of you mentioned, i had also my doubts if its a good thing to restore the wrap. But i told the vet that i can do it and he was vey excited and wants to see the result. I will take some pictures with him and the wrap when i have finished.

Maybe i will stitch the insignias only by hand so they sit tight to the wrap but can be removed easily and will not leave traces. Its only for display and not
to fool other collectors ...

I agree and adding is not restoration etc. When I have worked on tunics we use period materials and only the (original) type of insignia that was on the piece during the time of the War. I have tunics that I have been waiting 5 or more years to find a matching insignia. It has to be done to a professional level and with responsibility. IMO not restoring them is like having a classic car without wheels or a hood.

Who is he? He looks to have been part of Beckers assault gun battalion 200, part of battle group Von Luck. Its not Von Luck, because his wrap did not have an Afrika with palms at that time-I think. I dont know if Becker was a Afrika vet, I dont think so, therefore I assume its a company commander within the above unit.

He must have some interesting experiences to tell.

PS its not Becker as he was older and had a chest full of medals, though he did have an assault gun wrap.

8.(Schw.)/Panzergrenadier-Rgt. 192? If my guess is correct I have a branch color question for him. While in Normandy did he wear meadow green or rose pink? I know that after all these years it may be hard for him to remember.

The branch color of the insignias worn on the wrap was pink, thats confirmed by the vet

Good thing they were not pink piped AG type tabs as they would be very difficult to locate...Should be easy to find regular officer tabs and boards.
