    Odd construction boards

Could I please ask for opinions on these, the wool is a wide weave. Thanks

Artillery, this is the pair I am on the fence with. The wool material I have seen before is like a broad cloth.

Nothing on this? To the glee of the unshoed I may retire from commenting any more. I am getting rather sick of all the taking and not giving. I guess that is a fact of the "Google generation".

        Johnny,

I wasn't quite sure what the question is. I think I understand it to be how wide the waffenfarbe colored wool sticks out on each side of the top braid?

If that is the question I have usually found that to be a trait of post war manufactured boards. The wool usually appeared to be of postwar manufacture also, while the wool on yours does not look much different from WWII era wool. I will not say that it is not possible to have WWII boards with this appearance, I just can't recall seeing any I would be comfortable with.

My apologies if I misunderstood the question.

        Richard

I am most interested in the base materials used. I do not especially like the Engineering pair but am on the fence.

I have seen boards tailor made for smaller officers, the first image shows a standard board, the smallest one I have ever seen (8.5 CM) with sew in boards the tailor can just cut the board to size. For removable the boards acatully need to be made and sized for the individual. I think the Artillery boards may be an example of this but want them to be real and always like other opinions.

More images of the others and a top view. The first comment does not pertain to the responsible members of the forum. I get frustrated when people PM, ask for comments, I post them and then never am thanked etc. Maybe that is commonplace in the New and better modern World.

Maybe late War or decidedly fake?

Thanks Richard, in post #5 you can see the broadcloth weave, very thick wool. This wool was made durign the period (and long before) but I have not seen it used for board bases. The board is hand made. The tunic there were on had Jager insignia which matches the unit. Everything else was 100%

I have been out of internet range for the past week. Sorry for hte delay. I have seen period items with wide weave base material. I like all of these boards a lot.

As a side note, a lot of the modern reproductions I have seen utilize a wide weave, using synthetic materials.

Thanks Paul, someone needs to keep the hula girls entertained. I black lighted the engineering pair and I know that there are exceptions etc. but I did note that the bases under the Russian braid do glow, whatever the braid is wrapped around etc.

I have seen this happen on a few LW tabs too, with the inner threads for the outer piping and gulls of officer tabs.

Thanks, I guess they are just ugly. I am going to run the engineering guy's name though NARA see if the rank matches. He should have had better taste in boards. These look like diving boards.
