Look at this site, http://www.ssbw.co.uk/ and go to Insignias, you'll find there a pair of boards and tabs in the condition as they were found.

    Hello Andreas,

thank you for your input and I agree with your point about the factory find in regard to the tabs which Steve first posted to start this thread. On this point you are 100% correct. I believe that skulls were also found but they were in factory boxes and not attached to the tabs.

I do not however like the tabs and boards on the "ssbw" site. The piping on the "ssbw" is a type considered to be postwar although it may in fact be very late in the war.

The fact is however that many collectors do not accept that type of piping plus the way it is joined on the tabs i.e. the ones on this "ssbw" site. The matching boards also look highly suspect in my opinion, appear to be made of the same materials as the tabs and are not something I would want.

These Assault gun wrap tabs and boards on this site are not ones found in the hoard with the tabs which started this thread.

    Best regards, Chris

I cannot consider attaching genuine skulls to genuine tabs a crime ...

After a bit of follow up investigation in "the Fatherland" the evidence seems to be pointing quite clearly to these stug/ panzer tabs being found with the skulls already on the tabs.

The tabs are 100% and anyone who seems to think that German dealers are having them made up today then could I please ask for some red piped ones in black

No these are period and are part of a shop find. A quantity of loose skulls was also found but they were in 3 different styles and in one case close but still slightly different to the ones on the tabs.

Certainly the two prong skulls would appear to be a late war phenomenom not seen through out the whole war but then several phenomenom have emerged that appeared at the end such as the "grey rln binos" and the "balken flag" to name but two so just because they are from the end of hostilities does not make them bad. The wool used on them is certainly the later war stuff perhaps favouring that slightly brown/ olive hue in it typical of later 44 & 45. The rayon piping & application 100% text book.

I will post some images when I get a chance but how often does one still find pairs of these tied togther as they were waiting to be issued in 44/ 45
