That's much harder. It could be an "8", not fully opened up because it would have "hit" the letters above it. I honestly am not sure at all.

Kent, I think this was an infantry officer, not transportation. Not much hep on the translation, but perhaps you'll have more luck looking in the ground-pounder officer ranks.

            Regards, Robert

Kent, I'd say it says Hoffmeyer and not Huffmeyer. Whoever wrote this tag used a script that still resembles the old Sütterlin. Look at the "u" in Leut. and then compare it to the second letter in "H*ffmeyer". Except for that, I totally agree with Leroy & I'd also say it could very possibly say 38.

                    thanks Kurt (nice information )

any idea where a good place would be to start researching ?
I know I have very little to go on, but I like a challenge

Im pretty sure its a transport tunic, due to its light blue trim on the shoulder boards, and collar tabs. (so this may help me ) also there are 3 medal loops, which may narrow down the search .... maybe LOL

Reserve officers are hard to find in records and are not on the most available ranglisten. He probably was older had WWI service if there are loops for 3 awards given the date and rank. I agree with Kurt on the last name and think the year is "38"- There are some possibilities on the Graves site-

                      Nachname: Hoffmeyer
                      Vorname: Wilhelm
                      Dienstgrad: Leutnant
                      Geburtsdatum: 20.08.1894
                      Geburtsort: Waldenburg
                      Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 27.12.1939
                      Todes-/Vermisstenort: Warschau

He was born a long way from where the jacket was tailored but people did move etc.

No transport listed units in that town but it was nto unusual for reserve officers to live somewhere else etc. -

I think this officer was infantry, not transport. Here is a picture of the overall tunic.

That tunic is for an Oberleutnant.
The shoulderboards seem to be Infantry.

Correct. This is the tunic in which the tag shown appears. The tag is for a Lieutenant, which would be fine for this tunic.

                              Lovely tunic anyways.
Would you mind sharing a few more photos of it?
I'd like to see some photos of the collar tabs.
                              Many thanks, pal.
