You need to buy a black light. Used to be able to buy them in record shops or head shops but I don't know if there are any around anymore. Go to a pet store and pick up one as they are used to check for urine stains. They're around $10.
If the white thread glows blue it's most likely bad. Of course an original one can glow if it's been washed in modern detergent but then it wouldn't glow as bright if it has.
