    Nebel Waffenrock

Some of you I am sure saw this on German Ebay. For some strange reason I bought it. I would like some opinions on it. It was at one time set up for a Spiess (all the tress has been removed) and must have been a dandy in its day. It was sold as a stripped officers tunic and has typical officer style Armelplatten on it. I had a couple questions-

The distance between the cuff tabs is very close. Have others seen this in period applications? The buttons are mounted through the cuff and the cuffs machine sewn shut. The color photographs differently but in hand are much closer in hue etc.

These are the collar ghosts, I cannot tell if they wre tailor-made EMS or officer tabs, two outlines.

The last question would be if people have seen Spiess turned into officers. To me it seems like that would be more likely for lower ranks like Feldwebels and with OAs etc. I would suspect there is a good chance this guy was WWI Vet and a very experienced NCO seems unlikely they would find him more useful as an Lt.

I like the tunic. Of cours some other like me saw it on german eBay, 2-3 weeks ago.
I beleave it gone for a good price, because of the salty condition, that's why I did not bid on it.
Neverless a very nice and very rare tunic!

        Cheers,

I think after it is restored you will be very suprised at what can be done to these. The hard thing is finding the pieces to do it.

I did bid on them, that said they were not taken from this tunic, the Tabs are for TSD Judicial and could not be used to restore this, aside from that they sold for 250 Euro or something like that which IMO is twice what they are worth.

It was not originally for an officer, the tress outlines are there. IMO someone tried to restore this thinking it was an officer based on the Armelplatten. The eagle was machine sewn through the lining and there are two outlines for the collar tabs, one elongated EM and one for officer. The holes for the boards are also wider than officer boards and fit EM boards perfectly. After spending more time with it IMO it was without question for a Spiess.

The arm panels look like they were also TSD Judicial as well.

Great tunic. I like the Nebel waffenfarbe a lot!

Here are some images supporting what I described. First the color of the tabs is the same as the ones that were sold at the same time as the tunic. The second image are tabs in the correct Early Nebel color used which matches the piping.

The dark red tabs do not match, the Nebel tabs in hand match very closely. You can also see the outline of the two tabs being machine applied. One for an officer tab sewn with no evidence for wear and the other smaller inside it (high quality elongated private purchase EM) and is faded etc. You can also see where the NCO tress covered the collar and prevented it from fading but rubbed above the smaller tab

The boards are the best evidence, Officer boards are almost a CM more narrow then the openning and the worn areas where the original boards were. You can see the rub from the oriignal board base in the first image on the right side of the opening. There also is seam sewn inside the opening only allowing about 5 mm of a board to be inserted. An officer board can be put into the hole but could not be sewn in. The Private NCO tabs fits perfectly into the cavities on both sides but the officer board is loose and does not fill the pocket.

Here you can see where the Spiess tresse was removed and the NCO tresse from the cuffs and the Gun layers badge.

That gunlayers spec patch has left almost a shroud of Turin effect. Had to say it being Easter Good luck on your restoration.
