Piped Pioneer Hauptmann Walking Out Tunic

Hi all,

Here is my latest acquisition from Mike Davis at Virtual Grenadier (a great guy to deal with by the way!). This one is a named and fully piped light weight walking out tunic for a Pioneer Hauptmann in the Railway Pioneer Battalion 3. The tunic is made of a very fine light grey material, and is fully piped along the collar, the front, and the cuffs. Condition is generally nice, with some staining to the under arms and a little fading from where the belt was worn (indicating it may have been worn in warmer climates).

Pioneer officer piped tunics seem to be hard to come by, so I was happy when I managed to get hold of this one. Can anyone read the name label?

I'd say his surname was Lang.

Brad, what a gorgeous tunic... I'd say any piped tunic is hard to find... (Artillery being the rarest of them all because they were all turned into Generals in the last couple of years). Great score & the light weight material adds to the character.

I agree with товарищ that the name reads: Oberlt. Lang. I'd say the date is June 1943.

Hauptmann Lang will be pretty hard to trace down with the name (it's pretty common in Germany). You may want to go through his unit. There were several Pioneer schools in Rehagen Klausdorf so the tailor makes perfect sense and it's pretty safe to assume that he spent some time there in the summer of '43 and lived long enough after that to be promoted.

The Volksbund has 19,820 entries (!!!) with the name Lang. I ran a very superficial and quick search & found one that could theoretically be your man:

Kurt's Hauptmann Lang as the possible owner of the above tunic is supported by the fact that Eisenbahn-Pionier-Regiment 3 was during the Summer of 1944 in the vicinity of Kischinew.

In the May of 1944 the E.Pi.Rgt.3 was evacuated by sea from the Crimea to the southern Ukraine.
Hauptmann Lang must have been taken prisoner before August 23, 1944 and died in the POW field hospital in Kischew on August 28.
The Eisenbahn-Pionier-Regiment 3 was removed from the eastern front on August 23, 1944 for rest and redeployment.

Thats the type of uniform you like to see when you've just spent your hard earned bucks and put your faith in a dealer to accurately photograph and describe the item.
