Hello Glenn, looks thicker in the pics but they are deceiving, its actually very finely woven, and light as a feather. I can tell from the close up of Zellers that its also a very fine weave material, and looks right.

yes, mine also. as you said, feather light and qiute fragile. Im surprised they are in as good shape as they are. of course I do have a few tears in mine. (which causes me to have a few tears) Glenn

Glenn mine has two small tears as well, and is very fragile, I keep it well tucked in the hood to avoid any further damage, I can imagine these in my opinion would have been somewhat of a hassle to use, wear, and think many soldiers probably just ripped them out, it would take as you can tell not much pressure to do so, its just a single strand weave as fine as guaze and only a bit studier, I not yet seen a veil 100 percent without holes, they must be out there, just havn't see one. mine will also "ball up" on itself as yours/Zellers but on one ocassion, I simply took a light iron to it to get it to hang correct, without damaging it.

I did the exact same thing awhile back and it came out pretty nice. lays much better now. as you said, "like guaze."

there is something warm and appealing to this thread. something band of brothers like about original smock owners...the poignancy of those who want one...altogether a great sideline. i hear trousers of like light fabric were made to match these...does anyone have any to show or knowledge to confirm or dismiss my hearsay knowledge re smock trousers..?

I have seen at least two sets of the trousers since the 1970s...so they are not common! They are made sort of like overalls and have (I think that I recall) some thin straps that go over the shoulders to hold them up.

I suspect that they were never made in a 1:1 ratio with the smocks....maybe more like a 1 in 50 or something like that.

I have never seen the trousers, however theere is a period german training film which I believe (I could be wrong) MAY show them in wear. I do believe they do exist, but can not prove it, however it would make sense. I hae seen two original perfect gebirgsjager over trousers (light weight duck material) to go with the pullover GJ smock, with the chest pockets, and many disputed these even existed however the ones I saw in a very old collection were dead on right, and made of the identical cloth as the jackets. The same I believe is true of these smocks, I have always loved them in this wonderful pattern, and I can't imagine they were issued/made in any where near the quantities of the SS smocks, yet SS smocks will still fetch 3 to 4 and more times the price. It is (the marsch pattern smock) a very appealing and sexy looking garment, and rightfully deserves more adoration than its BIGGER SS brother. The splinter army smocks are even rarer.

Gloves out of the same identical Marsch material have surfaced over the years, and one set in particular i know of with an entire cache of vet acquired items, they are very well executed, the material is unmistakably period, and I believe them to be period issued, just gut feeling, but cannot point to any photographic evidence, other than the one source of material I saw, in which the gloves were even listed on the capture papers.

I agree. The mixture of camo makes it very unique.

Yes, those trousers are very rare. I once thought I found a pair, but they turned out to be a pair of winter camo with the lining removed. The price was right so I kept them for a sniper display.
