    What are these boards for? Look kinda high ranking, white wool backing.

      They are in the form of boards for a Chief of Regiment which for IR 4 would be Ernst Hasse. Can you post more pictures.

                  They are gold and silver piped. Very tarnished. From the Vet's Grandson today.

                  What kind of unit was this, Infantry?

                    Hasse was honorary Chief of the 4th Infantry Regiment. He was appointed to that position and allowed to wear a special uniform. He shot himself in 1945.

                      Skip, can you post a scan of the underside with the tongues moved out of the way? I am interested to see if they were made that way - ie, if the white underlay covers the prongs or if they are pushed through the fabric.

                          I noticed that the numerals are not a perfect match, which that might explain. They certainly match in terms of aging and patina.
