This photo is part of a larger grouping of late war Gebirgsjaeger photographs that I have got. Could you someone explain the rank insignia on the cuff of this man please? Cheers, Torsten.

I agree its an early picture of Reichsheer-Wehrmacht transitional period.
The uniforms already have the WH breast eagle,
but the cuff insignia is still the old Reichsheer pattern shooting award / Marksman badge.
These were of course later replaced with the Wehrmacht pattern marksman lanyards.
btw the early Luftwaffe also used similar insignia in the late 30's.
