Tony's right (hardly ever wrong, methinks?!)
The image appears earlier than late as the m40 cap still retains the soutache - not that that means a great deal as soutached caps were still being issued in 1943. A pity the upper pocket details are not seen, but I'd cautiously punt for a 1st pattern judging by the quality of the tunic's twill (nice and 'stiff' even though it shows service wear). Interesting to note that this medical leutnant (?) has replaced all the insignia on the tunic...I wonder where it is today?
Great shot of the cap. Any chance of a closer image of that by itself?
