They look like Army medical Sgt. shoulder boards. If they are blue they are LW which would make sense. On my screen they look field gray.

        John,

You are correct, they are Army medical JR, NCO shoulder straps.

Actualy, that may not be true, he may have worn these on a field uniform especially later in the War. See if he was a medic in the book, you may be surprised. Have more faith in the good people that give you things like FJ soldbuchs.

              straps

A friend who spent 4 years in the 14. Pz. Div. had such a shabby uniform that when they surrendered he was wearing several LW items he got from Fallschirmjaeger. He still has a pair of medical Uffz. straps though he was a Panzermann. He told me he only wanted his rank evident, heedless of the incorrect piping color. And they are the cheap-looking felt type most everyone would pass by at a show!

Nice worn set!! As John stated, if the soldbuch states a medical posting. Wouldnt really matter Lw Book and Heer Straps. Not that Uncommon to see the insignias of one service on the uniforms of the other. Especially in waffenfarbe shades that were common to both organizations.

Nebel wore red for artillery and mixed red with bordo later in the War. They could not get the correct insignia and used what ever they could get including recycling insignia from KIA soldiers belongings etc..
