    Unusual Lw Ranks

    Hi,
Can anyone please explain to me the following 2 Lw ranks?
    • Fahnenjunker Gefreiter
    • Unteroffiziers-anwärter Gfr.
The insignia can be see on this website: http://www.reenactor.net/units/17lwfd/6b-luft_rank.html (it's near the bottom of the page).
    Thanks.

The insignia on the website are not correct.

There are Unteroffizieranwärter (NCO candidates) and Offizieranwärter (officer candidates). A Unteroffizieranwärter has a piece of Tresse around his shoulderboard which looks like the Tresse around the collar of an Unteroffizier uniform. An officer candidate wears a Silberlitze (silver cord like the one around the collar of an officer uniform) around his shoulderboard. When the officer candidate reaches a NCO rank like Unteroffizier or Feldwebel, the Litze around his shoulderboard says he is a Fahnenjunker-Unteroffizier or Fahnenjunker-Feldwebel.

      That's a Fahnenjunker-Unteroffizier for example:

Thanks RamJet for your quick response and for the picture.

Would the proper rank for any Unteroffizieranwärter be Unteroffizieranwärter +(Rank, i.e. Gefreiter)? Also, could one be promoted to Unteroffizier from any Unteroffizieranwärter rank?

        Tschüß.

No, the proper rank would be Gefreiter (Unteroffizieranwärter), but no one woul call him with this addition. In the Bundeswehr it is abbreviated UA, so it would be Gefreiter (UA) in writing, but I am not sure if this was handled the same way in the Wehrmacht. Promotion was possible from every enlisted rank Gefreiter and above, as far as I know.

          Have a nice Sunday,
          Steve
