It looks like it was converted to a coat for civilian use after the war? Does it have any markings inside?

        no markings inside

But has the sleeve linings like you see in officer tunics but this is of em quality wool. The outer buttonholes are sealed so I thought somehow it was a wartime conversion, apart from that is it worth restoring?

          yep,
looks like. but there must be markings inside.
is it worth to restore it?
Normally everything is worth to restore it; every item which comes from this time.
          should be saved.

If period insignia are used I think it would be a great restoration job.

                  Thanks

wouldn't take much, the size is so huge, might make for a good mechanic or construction?

I love projects like this, I believe I would do my best to restore it as close to original as I could. Good Luck! If you decide to give up on it, give me a yell, I would love to own it.

I would not restore it. Every day some collectors ask on WAF to know if their 1000 dollars items are genuine ; I would not add one more "trap".
                          But it's yours.
