Aufklaerungs Abteilung 29

The moths enjoyed this too; but, it is still a rare strap. An enlisted Waffenrock strap for Aufklaerungs Abteilung 29 of 29. Infanterie Division (mot.).

Part of the German 4th Army; which was at Stalingrad:

Stabsfeldwebel (Master Sergeant) in the 34th Artillery Regiment.

The 34th served with the 34th Infanterie-Division and from Nov. 43 - Jan. 44 was fighting at Tscherkassy (Cherkassy Pocket), though I can't find much information on the artillery regiment itself. Believe these units used the 105 MM guns.

Very nice pieces David! I would assume, by the rank, that the 79. Infanterie board probably belonged to the regimenntal commander. By chance, do you have information on the officer?

Schulterklappen, thanks. Sorry, I have no information on the 79 Inf. Oberst., only that it was once sewn to a tunic.

Infantrieregiment 79 was renamed Schützen-Rgt. 79 in 1940 (Pz-Gren-Rgt 79 in 1942) and assigned to the 16th Panzer Division.

The board could have belonged to Martin Gilbert (Oberst IR79 until 1939) or Paul Wagner (Oberst IR79 until August 1940)

Here is my contribution to this great thread - this board is on a piped tunic that I own for an NCO of the 3rd Company, 41st Pioneer Battalion.



The 41st Pioneer Battalion was formed in 1935 and fought in the campaign in France, and partook in the invasion of Russia in 1941. The battalion was largely destroyed at Stalingrad in January 1943, and was re-formed in May 1943 as a motorised engineer battalion. The battalion then fought in the Balkans (Albania, Macedonia, Hungary). Alas I do not know much about the final stages of the battalion towards the end of the war.

Very nice tunic, congratulations! I am trying to remember things from Enemy at the Gates (not the movie either!). Wasn't there a Major Josef Lindemann, that brought in groups of assault Pioniers,
to help storm the factories? Was Pionier Bataillon 41 one of those?

The Pi.Btl.41 was (as you mentioned) an independent combat-engineer battalion. It came to LI. Armeekorps (6th Army) early in November 1942.

You're thinking of Pi.Btl.45 here. The independent Pi.Btl.41 was with 6. Armee for the entire battle (August 1942 until the very end) but it doesn't get mentioned very often.

You're thinking of Pi.Btl.45 here. The independent Pi.Btl.41 was with 6. Armee for the entire battle (August 1942 until the very end) but it doesn't get mentioned very often.
