    Back from The Dead

Some of you will remember this tunic from the Konklin Fraud Benefit Auction named to Lt. Col. Karl Steppan who was for a short time commander of the II Battalion, 12th Schutzen Rgt. We completed restoration on it using all period materials and sewing techniques. My friend is a master and it is impossible to tell it has been restored. He works on US Military uniforms for many museums in the US. I built the boards and aged the insignia. This is why I don't trust many things we see as "untouched"

Herr Oberst Steppan. . .he had a bit of a belly so it does not hang on the form correctly below the belt, note the waist seam. My form is too thin to display it properly.

Cuffs, sewn as they were originally with only in the four corners of each Platten.

There was a nickel sized hole surrounded by several smaller ones. My friend removed and then wove extra badge cloth from the cuff interior into the original wool to repair the holes.

John, while you are posting, did officers ever wear their daggers with the waffenrock or was it mostly swords? Jacques
