JC, the guys who have commented on the eagle know their stuff and are 100% right. Unless the dead German soldier your great uncle got it from was wearing a roll of these as a necklace, or belt, the story won't work. It is original, and it is Navy, and it has never been on a uniform.

I agree, chalk in another REMF tale of glory.

        Steady there, JC620.

Just consider where you're GG-uncle would possibly have encountered a dead sailor wearing a blue jumper, eh? Just be glad it is an original insignia and not a fake.

Family lore often gets enlarged in the re-telling of the story...especially when told to a wide-eyed youngster. You're not the only one. There are several such war stories in my family that lost a lot of gloss when I bothered to do a little more in-depth research.

I am a combat vet and a one time collector of this stuff.

Most of my family and all my preferred friends and associates are vets.

I have uncovered a tall tale or two in my own family stories.

It is fairly common to have tales embellished or misunderstood and passed on as such. Sometimes the story gets better everytime it is told.

The guys here live this stuff. This eagle was never attatched to anything other than a roll of mates.

I saw a lot of these in the 60s.

All of the cloth badges I wore was sewn on with folded edges.
I have some I removed and kept-wings, CIB, etc.

Once this is done the folds are permanent and quite prominent.

The REMF remark was out of line, even for a vet to make.
