Edelweiss - cloth - assistance please.

    Hello,

As I'm not a cloth collector (yet) I would like assistance with this item please. I know it's an Edelweiss emblem and believe it was worn by mountain troops. I have photographed it on a background of dark blue denim to show the black color of the patch itself. Can someone please assist me with some information as to it's proper wear and period of issue?

    Thanks to all in advance.

    Regards,
    Stu

        Edelweiss

        Hi Stu,
That patch looks real familiar. It is a army edelweiss and is worn on the right sleeve. It is the type more commonly used by enlisted men.

I guess you never saw the movie Where Eagles Dare with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood.

        Jody

          Thanks

          Hi Jody,

It should look familiar. It came with that AFRIKAKORPS cuff title I got while in Arizona last month. From some fellow who had a full set of mint Schwerin KM badges. Quite something to see in hand.

Guess I'll be going to the video rental shop this weekend. All in the name of research of course.

          Your friend,
          Stu

Hi Stu, just to add that it is a nice original badge.

Introduced on 2nd May 1939. Worn 16cm from the shoulder seam on the Feldbluse, Waffenrock and Greatcoat by all qualified mountain troopers. Worn throughout the war.

Can also be found in a machine woven "Bevo" form and in a later feldgrau coloured background, as opposed to your early dark green badge cloth backed version.

            Cheers, Ade.

              Green not black?

              Hi Ade,

Thanks for the info. I'll have another look at it under better light. Would have bet money that it was black cloth but the eyes are not what they once were.

              Cheers,
              Stu

Hi Stu, no it is dark green.

Black backed versions are for the Waffen SS Mountain troopers and the design is very different. Here is an SS version which I picked up a few years ago in this nice little Vet haul.

                Cheers, Ade.

I'll bet that sleeve eagle made your day! The rest is nice too but my eyes keep going back to the eagle. Congrats,

                    Hi Richard, yes it did.

I got the lot on Christmas Eve five years ago. I showed it on the forum and I thought that my PM box was going to explode with all the offers to buy it Still not for sale before anyone asks.

                    Cheers, Ade.

                          Hello
Your Edelweiss is not the standard Edelweis worn with feldbluse but it is private edelweiss worn with dress blues or personal dress
The only standard is "Bevo" made
I add this pic with the two continental version
                          Regards
