Help with an NCO Parade Waffenrock

I obtained a parade Waffenrock for cavalry on my recent trip to Germany. The eagle was removed from the jacket but the owner had kept it. So now I have the tunic and eagle but don't know how to best restore it. I have some original period thread and would like to re-attach the eagle. Does anyone have some close ups of a parade tunic eagle so that I can see the stitch pattern. I want this to be as authentic as possible in the restoration attempt. Any help appreciated. I've tried to attach an image but for some reason never can manage to do so. I'll have to upload it to the web first and load it as an attached jpeg image later.

I just want to add that sometimes with private purchase tunics NCO used officers-quality breast eagle, embroided in silver wire on dark green backing. What type of eagle do you have?.

      thanks

Regardless of the tunic type, the hand-stitching will be the same. Follow this link to my collection here on the Forum. They are general's eagles, but it will be the same technique.

Hello Guys, thanks very much for all the information. I have determined from the pictures that the eagle was trimmed from the uniform at the edge where eagle ends and the background cloth begins. In other words, the background cloth was trimmed to the eagle and there is no more to use to sew the eagle to the tunic. The kind of eagle that I have is the one shown in the first scan. I guess I need to try to locate one that still has the background cloth to it. Thanks again guys.

I saw the eagle on the e-stand and noticed it looked exactly like the one that came with the tunic. I thing the words officer's and combat kept me from believing it was the same type of eagle. Would this officer's combat eagle be the same type that is pictured in the first picture of this thread? The cloth on the one offered for sale looks somewhat darker too.

It would be very unusual to see any breast eagle on a Waffenrock machine sewn to the uniform. However, the variety of hand stitches one can find are numerous. I do not know a lot (or I should say...nothing) about sewing, but I believe the various stitches are somewhat 'universal' and 'timeless'. Thus, asking any tailor shop to show you examples of how they would hand stitch something on a jacket would be enlightening. In my opinion, the one thing common about wartime, hand stitching when done by a commercial tailor is that it is very neatly (professionally) stitched. In contrast, something hand stitched by a unit tailor might just as well look like you or I did it.

Thanks for the info Scott. Luckily my wife is handy with a needle and thread.
