Hi Jeff, it is the Govt Admin Officials sleeve insignia. Worn on the lower sleeve.

Rank of Regierungsoberinspektor, Group IV officials of pay grade A4b1. (According to Brian L Davis book)

        Cheers, Ade.

Hi Adrian - Thanks for the fast answer and reference. Did you recognize it straight up? Just curious, because that was real fast.

It is in Feldgrau, so was it worn on a field tunic?

It is of very high quality that is for sure.

Hi Jeff, I did recognise it straight away, I have a pretty good memory, but I confess I had to reach for my book for the spelling

The tunics came in a dark blue/black with matching insignia as well as a grey service uniform, again with matching insignia.

            Cheers, Ade.

OK, thanks. Trying to figure out how it could have gotten to a US Vet. I guess these folks could have been captured by the US Soldiers along with the Wehrmacht personnel.

                Patch

GIs got into everything, I have seen some weird bringbacks for Eastern insignia etc. There must have been shops or stores of it where it was found.

GIs took stuff out of houses as well. German troops were sometimes angered to find GIs with SA daggers and other souvenirs not picked up on the battlefield, but looted from civilian homes.

Thanks for the info Gents. Yes, SA's would not expect to be battlefield pickups, like an enlisted visor caps and parade medals.

This one shows wear and use and was removed from a tunic. So, I guess I can assume these military inspectors operated pretty far forward in the fight.
