I beleive it's a converted splinter jump smock. You can faintly see the splinter design and the zipper pockets at the shoulder. Can't tell if it has been shortened or not but probably has

                      textbook versus fantasy,

Beautiful picture and so much for textbook, if this combination would be offered today many would decline it as being a fantasy piece.

                        Rouen August 44

I like to think that this young Leutnant is an officer of Panzer Regiment 3 from 2.Panzer Division.
Taken in Rouen at the end of august this roll of photos was shot just before or perhaps just after a big allied bombing on the river side of the Seine during crossing by German forces !
I like very much this photo of Panzer IV crew ! Unfortunatly on the movie film made at the same moment the operator choose to shot the men in front of them ! I had like to see him in move smoking this big cigar !
Hope these images will be found one day somewhere..
Sorry just a dream I would share ...
                        Laurent

PS What do you see on the right side of his chest just under the pocket ?

I need to revisit this book, but if I'm not mistaken there is actually also another picture of this same officer in "Ruckmarsch" which shows that the smock has been shortened to a more manageable length for panzer use, it is actually as short as a wrapper!

                              Hi Nick!
Around page 178 there s 2 more pics of him but he s wearing the smock inside the pants and i think you can see the pants are extended out cos of the smock
