    Lightweight tunic

This was on German Ebay recently. When I opened the box I thought it was fake but looking at it everything is constructed in period style etc. and it appears real.

The material is a shirt weight cloth and looks and feels like a 65/35 Polyester Cotton mix but is rayon or a wool based fabric based on burn-testing loose threads.

I have never seen a lightweight tunic in this fabric. Does anyone else have a uniform constructed out of this type of material? It must date to 1943+-.

The other odd thing is the battleship gray color.

I believe this to be real and would be interested in seeing any other examples. The eagle is mothed along the top. It is sewn on professionally but the mothing makes it look uneven.

    Thanks,
    J

                Lightweight Material

                Hi John,

Your tunic was obviously private purchase and NOT an issue item to almost anything is possible. I realy like it.

I once owned a Railway Tunic made of a very similar material. It was a very strong but lightweight wool / cotton / rayon blend.

My tunic had very heary wear and their was no doubt that it was a period piece. I'll search my old fabric books to see if I can find this exact type of material.

                    Thanks Diane:

I had one of those "oh crap" moments when I opened the box but feel better now. It looks like civilian dress fabric etc. I think it is a wool. It is very strange and has a weight like linen. Everything is 100% on it as far as construction fabric etc. I just wanted to post it to see if there were other examples.

The color is very unusual to me, almost like US battleship gray. It was reported to come straight from the family and shows very little wear. I wonder if it was made by family from bolt of slightly off color civilian cloth etc.

                    Thanks again,
                    John

                      John,

The materal looks very familiar. I think I've seen other private purchase pieces made from it. The tunic certainly looks believable.WR Jim

John, the tunic looks spot on to me. You cannot fault the construction. It seems that colour variations more often occured on lightweigt tunics. Jacques

                            Tunic

Thanks for the responses. For those in North America, I have a tan Dickies 65/35 polyester cotton workshirt and the two fabrics are almost identical in weight/feel etc. The tunic thread produces an ash after burning so is non-synthetic.

As a seperate issue I did some reasearch on Polyester and it was invented in 1921! That really suprised me. Thank you again,
                            J
