Hi Craig, without holding it in my hands, I'll go ahead and opine anyway. IMHO it lacks the quality of construction that I would like to see in a generals' bird. I am comparing it to some other bullion officers eagles that I have in front of me now. The use of the yellow thread really sticks out. The feet are there but, not very symmetrical and I've not seen the 'ankle bracelets' like this before. The top edges of the wings on the birds before me now are all perfect across the top and this generals' wings are a little uneven. The way the swas. is off center in the wreath also concerns me. I would use caution with this one.

Mike, thanks. By the way, I see you are in San Diego. Give me a call any time you're in the area - my office and showroom are in Solana Beach.

That is actually my thought also - could easily be marine artillery.

                Craig,

The construction and wear cenrtainly look period but as the others have said and I agree, I doubt it was destined for a general's tunic. Marine Artillery is a good guess.

Is the backing material dark blue or bottle green? If it's dark blue it could just be a navy eagle from an officer or senior nco. if bottle green could koastal artillery officers breast eagle

                    I agree..

same with, why is a luft eagle on black always refered to Hermann Goering troops while mechaniques wore the same eagle ?
Or the rare green backed Luft eagles, which easily can be woodchopper..

It's the illussion.., we want it to be what our mind is full of and forget many other aspects..
All has to be battle related, but a tough looking jacket can easily be one of the compagnie potatoe peeler.., a bummer, I know, but rather realistic.

                    Jos.
